Hi Michael,

 

Today marks a brilliant milestone for the railway as West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway (WM Trains) join the DFTO Group, bringing us even closer to the creation of Great British Railways.  

 

With WM Trains joining today, more than half of the future GBR operators are now publicly owned under DFTO. We employ almost 30,000 colleagues, manage over 1,100 stations, operate more than 2,200 trains and run more than 8,500 daily services – delivering well over 640 million journeys every year. That scale gives us a powerful platform to fix a fragmented system and build a railway owned by the public, for the public.

 

On Thursday, I travelled to Northampton and Wolverhampton for an event with Secretary of State Heidi Alexander to mark WM Trains’ transition into public ownership. As former Commercial Director of London Midland, it was nice to meet so many new colleagues, and some old friends too! At the event, we heard from a variety of stakeholders that reliability of service was their top priority. I expect to see progress on this in the coming months.

 

Our mission is to improve performance on the railway and drive rail reform, demonstrating the value of a railway that is truly integrated, customer focused and financially sustainable. We can only achieve this by working together with Network Rail and the Department for Transport toward this shared and ambitious vision.
