This preserved factory chimney is located in a courtyard at 61A St George's Street. It is one of the few surviving landmarks from Norwich's rich industrial past. What Was Here BeforeThis specific chimney dates back to 1867 and originally served a large brush factory. The Brush Factory: The factory operated for over a century before eventually closing and falling into a state of dereliction by the early 1980s.The Redevelopment: In 1992, the surrounding industrial site was cleared and redeveloped into residential apartments known as Sherwyn House. The Preservation: During the demolition of the factory, local planners and architects decided to integrate and preserve the distinctive brick chimney stack as a central historic feature for the new courtyard garden. The Wider Area's HistoryThe surrounding "Norwich-over-the-Water" district was once dense with factories and workshops. The skyline used to bristle with similar chimneys. Just across the street on St George's Plain stood the massive Howlett and White shoe factory (later known as the Norvic Shoe Company), which was once the largest shoe manufacturing plant in the country.ebay.co.ukPhoto 6x4 61A St Georges Street - preserved factory chimney Norwich 5 c2018 | eBay UKebay.co.ukPhoto 6x4 61A St Georges Street - preserved factory chimney Norwich This c2018 | eBay UK
