Railway fanatics flocked to a town in Essex today to be part of history as the first new train station opened on the Eastern main line for 100 years. Beaulieu Park was the first station to open its doors on this part of the UK rail network network since way back in the 1920s.
There was great excitement as the 7.20am train pulled in from Colchester for the historic stop. Crowds of people clapped and cheered as the train arrived. Rail chiefs were particularly pleased because the £175m station is opening four months early.
Excited passengers were onboard the train which then headed to London Liverpool St. Andy Cross, 47, said: “I just wanted to be part of history. It was a special moment.”

[28/10, 16:10] Michael Noël Turner: Why the 5G symbol on your phone doesn't mean you actually have 5G - BBC News https://share.google/JzEgiAcYMZ69FkEyS
When you see the 5G symbol at the top of your phone, you probably assume you're getting faster internet speeds - the kind promised when it first arrived five years ago.
Mobile networks told us that 5G would provide us with faster downloads, smoother streaming and instant connectivity.
It has received lots of investment from mobile operators and the government but has faced several setbacks, particularly as 5G requires a lot of masts because it delivers faster speeds over shorter distances.
New research suggests that the 5G symbol you see on your screen might not match what you're actually getting in terms of internet speed.
Tests carried out by research group PolicyTracker, and shared with BBC's Morning Live, found that nearly 40% of the time a phone displays the 5G symbol, it is actually using a 4G connection.
That means you could be paying for, and seeing, 5G while your phone quietly sticks to slower speeds.
The peak theoretical download speed for 5G is up to 20,000 megabits per second which is fast enough to download 18 HD films in under a minute, but for many of us our speed is far lower than that.
The research comes as some mobile networks begin rolling out "standalone 5G" - a new service that, they say, promises true 5G speeds all the time.
In order to benefit from this you will need to purchase a specific phone plan which often comes with a higher price tag.

[28/10, 21:35] Michael Noël Turner: Liverpool’s first ever five-star hotel is moving to “future proof the business” just days after being given the prestigious honour. It was confirmed last week how the Municipal Hotel and Spa in Liverpool city centre has received AA’s five-star rating, making it the first and only hotel in the city to hold that status.

[28/10, 21:39] Michael Noël Turner: The building that is now the Municipal Hotel & Spa was constructed in 1868 as the Municipal Buildings, serving as the headquarters for Liverpool City Council until 2017. Designed by architects John Weightman and Edward Robert Robson, it was a symbol of civic pride during Queen Victoria's reign. After being purchased by the Fragrance Group in 2017, the Grade II* listed building underwent a £45 million renovation and was reopened as a luxury hotel in May 2023.
History of the building
Construction and purpose: The building was started in 1862 and completed in 1868. It was built by the town council to house the city's growing administrative staff and served as Liverpool City Council's headquarters for almost 150 years.
Architectural style: The design is a notable example of Victorian architecture, featuring sandstone construction, a central clock tower, and a French-style curved roof. The interior includes a large, basilica-like main hall and sandstone statues representing Liverpool's arts, sciences, and industries.
Redevelopment into a hotel: In 2016, the council moved out as the building was deemed "surplus to requirements". In 2017, the Fragrance Group purchased the property. The building underwent a multi-million-pound renovation and extension, with work beginning in autumn 2020 and the hotel officially opening in May 2023 as the Municipal Liverpool – MGallery.
Renovation details: The refurbishment included restoring original features, removing modern additions, and constructing a new bronze-clad extension at the rear to house additional bedrooms and the spa facilities. The project created 179 guest suites and a spa complex complete with a pool, gym, and treatment rooms.
[28/10, 22:21] Michael Noël Turner: John Major tells Tories alliance with Reform would be ‘beyond stupid’ | Conservatives | The Guardian https://share.google/DlzwbczOPR8baVGTB
John Major has told the Conservatives that forming an alliance with Reform UK would “for ever destroy” the party, which he said had already left traditional supporters “politically homeless” by lurching too far to the right.
The former prime minister dismissed a pact with Nigel Farage’s party as “beyond stupid”, saying that any Tories tempted to defect to Reform should go now because his own party would be better off without them.
[28/10, 22:37] Michael Noël Turner: Students jailed after defrauding train operators for over £140,000 - Leeds | British Transport Police https://share.google/oJs2gh6mGMxTGB5vg
Two students who defrauded Train Operating Companies (TOCs) of an estimated £140,000 to pay for living expenses and tuition fees have been jailed, following a British Transport Police investigation.
Li Liu, 26, and of Clay Pit Lane in Leeds, pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and conspiracy to acquire criminal property and was handed a two and a half year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court last week on Monday 20 October.
He was joined by Wanqing Yu, 25, also of Clay Pit Lane in Leeds. She also pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and conspiracy to acquire criminal property, and was handed a 17-week prison sentence.
The court heard how from October 2021 to February 2025, Liu and Yu worked to abuse the Delay Repay compensation schemes offered by TOCs, using false identities, disposable email accounts, and international bank transfers to conceal their criminal scheme to fund their education and lifestyle.
The case was initially reported to BTP in November 2023 by CrossCountry Trains who identified the process Liu and Yu were using, finding that they had 447 fraudulent transactions to date. Other TOCs later found themselves to have also been the target of this operation by Liu and Yu.
Data obtained from CrossCountry Trains provided a vast array of information regarding Liu and Yu's scheme, with a common theme amongst the transactions being the many fake names and non-residential addresses tied to them. Email addresses were also found to be single-use and Chinese in origin.

Guinness has been promising that ‘good things are coming’ to Covent Garden for the best part of three years now. The brand first announced that it would be launching a brewery in London back in 2022 but has kept us on tenterhooks ever since. Finally, the wait is over. It’s officially been revealed that Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard will open its gates on Thursday, December 11.
The first tickets to the huge (54,000 square foot, to be exact) new drinking haven will go for grabs in November. The tour will include an immersive experience exploring Guinness’s heritage, exclusive access to the working microbrewery (which will be pumping out 14 different limited-edition brews, not actual Guinness), a tasting session with master brewer Hollie Stephenson and an opportunity to pour a pint of the black stuff yourself.
