The Cravens units, specifically the British Rail Class 105 diesel multiple units, were retired due to several factors:

- Age and Condition: Built from 1956 to 1959, these units were among the first generation of diesel multiple units. By the 1980s, they had reached the end of their service life.

- Asbestos Contamination: Many Class 105 units contained asbestos, which made them hazardous to work with and expensive to maintain. This was a significant factor in their eventual withdrawal.

- Electrification and Newer Trains: The electrification of lines from London King's Cross and the introduction of newer trains like the Class 313 EMUs in 1976 made the Class 105 units less necessary.

- Maintenance Issues: The units had issues with overheating, particularly on frequent stopping services, which required modifications to keep them in service.

- Passenger Discomfort: The rattling noise and vibration from the sliding windows and metal luggage racks made for an uncomfortable ride, contributing to their phased withdrawal.

The last passenger car was withdrawn from service in 1988, with only three cars preserved in museums ¹.
